Six terms, because a proposal becomes far easier to judge once the unfamiliar words stop functioning as noise.

- Tonnage. Cooling capacity, measured in twelve-thousand-BTU units. Larger is not better. An oversized machine short-cycles, never runs long enough to dehumidify, and leaves a house cold and damp at once.
- Latent versus sensible capacity. Sensible capacity lowers temperature; latent capacity removes moisture. In a Virginia summer the latent share is most of the comfort, and it is the number nobody quotes.
- Two-stage and variable-speed. Equipment that can run at partial output instead of full blast. The long, low run times this produces are precisely what a humid climate rewards, which is why the premium is easier to defend here than in a dry one.
- Balance point. The outdoor temperature below which a heat pump can no longer carry the house alone and backup heat engages. Where that point sits decides most of a winter operating cost.
- Refrigerant generation. Equipment sold now uses newer refrigerant chemistry than systems installed a decade ago, so a repair quote on older equipment and a replacement quote are not comparing like with like.
None of these are difficult. They are simply unfamiliar, and unfamiliar terms are what turn a negotiation into a nod.
What to do after the reading
Match the guide to the calendar, not to curiosity. Spring and autumn are when parts sit in stock and technicians answer the phone before noon. July and January are when a small fault becomes an emergency and every schedule in the county is full.
That timing is not an abstraction here.
